Pink Friday 2 is Nicki Minaj’s fifth full-length studio album following her fourth studio album, Queen, released in August 2018 and her August 2022 compilation album, Queen Radio: Volume 1.

The album was first teased as “the fifth thing thing” on her February 2019 freestyle “Barbie Goin Bad.” In June 2019, Nicki confirmed rumors surrounding the existence of the album in an interview with Jimmy Fallon, although she also said she didn’t have an album title or a release date yet.

In September 2019, Nicki announced her retirement from Hip-Hop, and then apologized for her statement, only to confuse her fans further after she spoke more about the album in an Elle interview later that month. In the interview, she called the album “fierce, fun, and unapologetic” and spoke about the album’s sound:

It’s probably the most excited I’ve been about an album release in a really long time. I’m happy that we’re not making my fans wait for another album like I’ve done in the past. This one incorporates all the things people love about Nicki, but it also just has a way bigger sound, so it goes perfectly with the collection.

In June 2020, Nicki mysteriously tweeted the words “PF2,” which many fans took as an announcement of the sequel to Nicki’s debut album Pink Friday. Then in January 2021, Nicki cleared her social media pages, with fans expecting a start of her next era.

The album’s release date of October 20, 2023, was officially announced by Nicki through a Tweet which read:

The album’s official release date was later shifted to November 17, 2023 and the official name of the album is Pink Friday 2 as Nicki Minaj states in a tweet.
