Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava is King Gizzard’s 21st studio album, released on October 7th, 2022. The album was the first of three total albums to be released within the month of October. The title, in addition to describing the lyrical content of the album, is a mnemonic device for the seven modes of the major scale: Ionian (or major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian (or natural minor), and Locrian. Each song on the album is composed in a different mode, in the same order as above – the first track is in the Ionian mode, the second track is in Dorian, and so on.

The band was constructed by combining and processing material from long jam sessions. The band calls it “their most collaborative album so far”. Main vocalist, Stu Mackenzie, says more on the process of making the album in a press release.

“We’d walk into the studio, set everything up, get a rough tempo going and just jam,” band leader Stu Mackenzie said in a statement. “No preconceived ideas at all, no concepts, no songs. We’d jam for maybe 45 minutes, and then all swap instruments and start again.”

First being teased with a tweet via the official Twitter account announcing the album would be releasing among two others, another tweet was also made, announcing October as the release month for these albums. These albums were made available to pre-order on September 7th.

On September 1st, a image teaser for the first single of the album, “Ice V”, was teased following a video teaser the following day. The tracks position on the tracklist was also revealed similar to how Omnium Gatherum’s tracklist was revealed. The music video for “Ice V” would be released along with the release dates for the three albums, including Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava.

Teasing for the second single before release, “Iron Lung”, would begin on September 21st with a visual teaser of the music video, Another visual teaser was also dropped. The track would release on October 4th.
