Changes is King Gizzard’s 23rd studio album, being the last release of a three-album drop throughout October 2022.

The first and only single, “Hate Dancin’”, was teased briefly via Instagram on October 12th with a clip of the music video that was a collab with PHC Films. The single would be released on Monday, October 17th.

Before the release of “Hate Dancin’”, a short film with PHC Films was also teased, titled Sleeping Monster, which followed King Gizzard through music video filming (shooting the music video clips for “Automation” and song making in October 2020. The film also featured the entirety of “Change” as an instrumental to the film, with a performance of the studio version of the song at the end of the film.

The album would then release on October 28th, 2022 worldwide.

The album first started out as an album originally being worked on in June 2017 and later released that year, but was scrapped due to the band being disappointed with the recordings,

“I think of Changes as a song-cycle, ..every song is built around this one chord progression — every track is like a variation on a theme. But I don’t know if we had the musical vocabulary yet to complete the idea at that time. We recorded some of it then, including the version of “Exploding Suns” that’s on the finished album. But when the sessions were over, it just never felt done. It was like this idea that was in our heads, but we just couldn’t reach. We just didn’t know yet how to do what we wanted to do.”

Mackenzie also stated that the band “didn’t have the musical vocabulary” to complete the album, according to an interview with NME. The album was the most complex that they had done music theory-wise, according to band member Joey Walker, which halted the release of the album.

“On a theory level, that album was actually the most complex we’ve ever done,” Walker explains. “Each song has a handful of chords, simple major, minor chords. Instead of being based in a key and moving around chords related to that key, every time we change to a chord, the whole key changes. If anyone’s familiar with John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps”, it’s that.”

Despite the album being scrapped, overdubs and rerecordings during their 2022 world tour gave the album a fresh breath of air, motivating the band to go forward with releasing the album.
